Light and Shadow

Corona Arch is one of my favorite places in Moab, Utah. The arch is huge and requires a decent hike to get to, which thins the crowds. On this day, the sun was shining in just the right spot to illuminate some of the arch but leaving other areas in dark shadows, a brilliant natural contrast.

First Snow

On a trip to Moab, Utah in October, I was surprised to wake up in the morning to a fresh coat of snow covering the red sandstone in the park. I had never seen snow in the desert and was enamoured by the sight. It was a cloudy morning, but I walked to this spot near Window Arch and was able to see the sun just trying to peak through the cold.

Inside the Arch

A unique perspective, I had found this location and eyed it up for a great sunrise on a previous trip to Arches in Moab, Utah. For this shot, I am actually inside of the Arch, with the sun illuminating one side, and the other still in shadow. This morning's sunrise added more drama when storm clouds parted ways to light.

Starburst Sunrise

A cloudy morning that erupted into a beautiful sunrise with a starburst through the clouds. Taken from inside Pine Tree Arch in Moab, Utah, I used a wide angle lens to show the detail of the sandstone directly in front of me. To capture the starburst required perfect timing, I'm glad I found this location to experience it.

Guiding Light

A rare capture of a brilliant sunbeam shining through the morning clouds in Utah. The sandstone rock formations in Arches National Park are what makes it popular, but it also has some unique vegetation and crazy weather patterns. This cloudy morning became beautiful when the sun broke up the cloud cover.

Moab Nights

The Milky Way shows off in the dark skies of Arches National Park in Utah. One of the darker areas I've gone for stargazing, you can see the glow from the small town of Moab in the lower right corner. The sandstone cliffs provide a nice contrast to the brilliant night skies.

Desert Mornings

I have spent a lot of mornings waking up to the sun in the desert, and each one is unique. This morning, I was walking back from a remote area where I was shooting night photography. While the sun rose, this scene developed in front of me and seemed like the classic desert morning.
